Domino’s delivers pizza to island off the Essex Coast in a world first
03 November 2020: Domino’s, the nation's best loved pizza company, has answered a lucky customer's call by performing a one-off, extraordinary delivery via…hovercraft!
Finding herself hungry and cut off by the high tide on Mersea Island in Essex, Kelly Wright reached out to the pizza delivery experts with a cheeky request. With this quiet, idyllic island cut off from the mainland at key mealtimes because of the tide, it took something extra special to make her dinner dreams come true.
Proving they have exactly what it takes to pull off a special ‘store to shore’ mission, Domino’s Colchester University Quays drafted in water-wizard, Benn Bristow for the world’s first offshore pizza delivery. Thanks to his 13 years of maritime expertise, certified pilot from the British Hovercraft Company, Benn was the perfect person to guarantee a delivery of piping hot pizza in style.
Domino’s newly appointed ‘High Tide Hero’ needed a fast and reliable way of getting to the island. Leaving the moped keys in store, with a pizza hot bag in hand, Benn jumped into his hovercraft to speed across land and water to ensure the delicious order was delivered to a shocked, but utterly delighted, Wright family on the Mersea shore – all within just 20 minutes.
Amandeep Sahota, Domino’s Colchester University Quays Store Manager said; “We get all kinds of unusual requests, but we think this is definitely a world first! Our store team were keen to rise to the challenge, so we pulled out all the stops for an extraordinary delivery to give the Wright family a fresh pizza order to remember. Our High Tide Hero proved that when it comes to putting our customers’ needs first, we’ve got this!”
Local resident, Kelly Wright, added; “Life on Mersea is great, but being separated by the tide does come with its challenges, including getting hold of a quick and easy Domino’s delivery. I have been craving a Pepperoni Passion for a while and seeing a hovercraft appear on the horizon with our order in was amazing. What’s more, the pizza was still hot! We really were the envy of all the island.”
Domino’s has previously demonstrated their A-grade delivery creds by extreme wakeboarding, cycling Penny-farthings, flying drones and even going above and beyond to deliver pizza by skateboard. Earlier this year a perfectly timed platform pick-up was arranged for hungry Scottish superstar Lewis Capaldi, while he was traveling by train from Edinburgh to London.
