Domino’s Pizza franchisee Gareth Thompson, who owns stores in Heywood and Middleton, faced his fears on Sunday 8 June as he took part in a sky dive to raise money for children’s charity, Rays of Sunshine.  Gareth and six of his store managers took to the skies and plunged 10,000ft in order to raise money to help grant wishes for seriously ill children within the UK aged 3-18.

Rays of Sunshine is Domino’s current charity partner, this charity grants wishes for children with serious or life-limiting illnesses.  The brave skydivers jumped from a plane at the equivalent height of 58,000 pizza boxes in order to help fund wishes for children like Christopher (9) from Macclesfield, who is living with MDS - Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Christopher’s bone marrow doesn’t work properly which means his body can't make healthy blood cells and relies on regular blood transfusions to survive. Money raised by Gareth and the team from this vertigo-inducing challenge will help fund Christopher’s Rays of Sunshine wish to go to Disney World in Florida with his family in November.

Fundraising activities have also taken place in the stores at Domino’s Heywood and Middleton, as they both ran a promotion to buy one medium or large pizza, get another one for £1 with the £1 going to this appeal.  The promotion ran from Saturday 7 – Saturday 14 June and so far, along with money raised by the skydive, the team has raised almost £2k.

Gareth Thompson, franchisee of Domino’s in Heywood and Middleton, said: “I was terrified to board the plane and take to the skies, it really was the most nerve wracking thing I have ever done.  As I was about the fall out of the plane, I thought to myself what am I doing?  My stomach was in knots and I thought please god let me land on the ground safely.  Jumping out of a plane is something I never thought I would do, but raising money for children like Christopher is very important to us.  Rays of Sunshine is a fantastic charity and my team and I were pleased to meet Christopher recently, which inspired us even more to continue with our challenge.  If we can help to make this lad’s wish come true and give him and a family a special memory then it’s all worth it.”

Christopher and his family recently visited the Domino’s store in Heywood, where Christopher had his first lesson in pizza making.  He really enjoyed his time in the store and him and his family are thrilled to have Gareth and his staff’s support.
